A dawn ceremony held this morning at the corner of Bridge Street and Haven Road marked the start of the substantial construction phase of the Bridge to Better project, with iwi laying a mauri stone to acknowledge the significance of the site and the work now underway. 

A brand-new playspace for Whakatū Nelson City, inspired by the cultural narrative of Te Wheke a Muturangi, will start construction next week, following completion of design and  resource consent approval.

Kōpū; the exhibition at Refinery ArtSpace brought the Whakatū community together to celebrate Māori design and shared vision. Through art, dialogue, and collaboration, it showcased how Toi Māori can shape the city’s future — embedding mana, meaning, and identity into its public spaces.

We are calling for toi Māori practitioners who want to help lift the presence of ngā toi Māori in our built-environment and public spaces in Whakatū. 

A design and build trio has been appointed for Playspace Whakatū, with concept designs underway.

More than 700 people have had their say on Playspace Whakatū, a new playground set to be built in the Nelson City Centre.
