NELSON AIRPORT
KAUPAPA
Welcoming the world through a uniquely Te Tauihu lens.
Nelson Airport is one of the most visible and important thresholds into Te Tauihu – where journeys begin and end. As the airport evolves over time, there is an opportunity to better reflect the cultural identity of this whenua in more meaningful ways. Kōpū is guiding the realisation of a Cultural Framework that brings whakapapa and iwi kōrero into the spatial and experiential design of the airport.
Working in partnership with Ngā Iwi o Te Tauihu, the cultural framework elevates a set of values and principles that shape every aspect of design – from the way people enter the precinct, to what they see, hear, and feel inside. It centres concepts of manaakitanga, pōhiri, and tauutuutu – ensuring that both haukāinga and manuhiri are acknowledged and cared for.
Cultural expression will be realised through both permanent and living interventions – from mahitoi, to te reo signage, wayfinding, and storytelling. This joint-up approach is essential to creating a space that reflects the identity of Te Tauihu and upholds iwi mana through this important gateway. Through co-design and strategic curation, the airport will become a place where people are welcomed into a space that speaks of migration, resilience, and connection.
These ideas will be physically expressed through key design elements such as a planned levitating waka at the arrivals/departures threshold, translucent glass expressions that play with light and shadow, and a series of narrative-driven interior and landscape interventions.
